Macron Delays Government Appointment Until After Paris Olympics
French President Emmanuel Macron has declared that he will postpone naming a new government until the Paris Olympics conclude on August 11. This decision follows a proposal from the New Popular Front (NFP), the largest group in France's parliament, which recently put forward Lucie Castets, a relatively unknown civil servant, as their candidate for prime minister.

The NFP's proposal has stirred controversy, with Macron stating that appointing a new government before mid-August would "create disorder." This delay has drawn criticism from left-wing politicians, who accuse Macron of attempting to "cancel the result of the legislative elections."
The Paris Olympics, set to begin with an opening ceremony on Friday, have become a backdrop for this political maneuvering. Macron had previously accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, following significant losses for their centrist party in the recent parliamentary elections. Attal and his team have agreed to continue in a caretaker capacity until new appointments are made.
In the French political system, the president typically appoints a prime minister who commands a majority in the National Assembly. Currently, no single party holds a majority, though the NFP controls at least 182 of the 577 seats, giving it a strong position to propose a candidate.
Lucie Castets, a 37-year-old economist and civil servant currently working as the director of finance and purchasing for the City of Paris, was put forward by the NFP. Castets, who lacks a background in party politics, accepted the nomination with "great humility but also great conviction," according to her statement on X.
Macron, speaking to France 2, emphasized that the issue at hand was not the candidate's name but rather the need to establish a parliamentary majority. He stated that a new government appointment before the end of the Olympics would be impractical and would disrupt the current focus on the Games. Macron also noted that no parliamentary group had yet emerged with a majority, making it uncertain which group would be able to propose a prime minister.
The president's comments have elicited a strong reaction from the NFP. Marine Tondelier, the national secretary of The Ecologists, one of the NFP's constituent parties, criticized Macron for "denial" and urged him to acknowledge the NFP's victory and the need to implement their agenda. Manuel Bompard, national coordinator of France Unbowed, condemned Macron's delay as an "unbearable denial of democracy," asserting that there is no presidential veto when the people's will is expressed.
