West Ham midfielder Lucas Paquetá expressed his anger following his red card in Sunday's 2–0 defeat to Liverpool, accusing the Football Association of neglecting him throughout the lengthy investigation that has shadowed his career.
Paquetá was sent off in the second half after earning two swift yellow cards for dissent, a moment that seemed to release a torrent of emotion he had contained for months.
The Brazilian faced two years of scrutiny as the FA investigated allegations that he deliberately sought yellow cards linked to suspicious betting behavior. Although he was cleared in July, the extensive inquiry cost him a significant transfer opportunity and impacted his mental health.
After the match, the 28-year-old took to social media to reveal how profoundly the experience had affected him.
“It’s difficult to cope with everything this has caused in my life and in my mind,” he stated. “I will continue to strive to ensure this doesn’t impact me any further. While this doesn’t excuse my sending-off, I apologize to the fans and my team-mates.”
His frustration was fueled when a commentator described his behavior as “ridiculous.” Paquetá responded that his actions on the pitch were a result of the stress he has endured during the investigation.
“It’s ridiculous to have your life and career impacted for two years without any mental support from the federation,” he stated. “Perhaps this reaction is a reflection of everything I’ve had to go through. I apologize if I’m not flawless.”
West Ham is expected to address the midfielder’s suspension later this week.
