On Thursday, Mumbai Police filed a case against an unidentified person related to a deepfake video featuring ex-cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. The former cricketer had earlier denounced a fake video circulating on social media, where he was falsely portrayed endorsing an online game using his daughter's earnings as an example.
After the video surfaced, Tendulkar clarified on social media that he had no connection with it and it was a manipulated creation. Expressing concern about the widespread misuse of technology, he urged for vigilance against misinformation and deepfakes.
In response to Tendulkar's statement, Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar mentioned implementing stricter rules under the IT Act for platform compliance.
Tendulkar joins the list of individuals victimized by deepfake technology, following Bollywood actor Rashmika Mandanna. Delhi Police promptly took action against those responsible for sharing a fake video of the actor on social media.
Deepfakes, combining "deep learning" and "fake," involve hyper-realistic AI-generated videos or audio. Such manipulated content raises ethical and societal concerns as it can depict individuals doing or saying things they never did.
