Leeds Charity Tackles Child Hunger in Schools with Food Initiatives

In a meaningful effort to combat child hunger, a Leeds-based charity is stepping in to assist schools with resources aimed at families impacted by food insecurity. Rethink Food, a dedicated non-profit organization, has taken the initiative to fund free fruit stalls, cooking classes, and food parcels.

With financial support now flowing to schools, these establishments are empowered to host supper clubs and provide grocery assistance for struggling households, especially as many families face soaring living costs.

Recent research from the University of Bristol indicates that schools have become the primary food aid providers in England, with approximately 4,000 school-based food banks currently active.

Rethink Food’s co-founder Nathan Atkinson voiced his alarm upon learning that some educators were personally covering food costs to aid students.

“It’s disheartening to see teachers and support staff using their own funds or bringing food from home,” he stated, noting the strain on school budgets.

The former head teacher, who established the organization, recalls how witnessing children struggle in class due to hunger motivated him to take action.

“It all began in 2014 when a student simply expressed they were hungry. It's hard for children to focus on learning when their basic needs aren’t met,” he explained.

Through its Food Pantry program, Rethink Food provides participating schools with weekly support of £100, enabling them to supply food parcels, cooking programs, and family assistance.

Morley Victoria Primary School is a key participant in the program, utilizing these funds to create a free fruit stall for students and a supper club where families can gather over meals.

Kevin Precious, the assistant head teacher, noted the financial strain on families has widened, affecting many who previously had stability.

“It’s not just the unemployed who are struggling; even families with two incomes are feeling the pinch as food and living expenses rise,” he remarked.

The school has observed an uptick in requests for support with school trips, sports gear, and essential food items.

Parent Anne-Marie Stobbs, with three children enrolled, shared her discontent over nearly doubling grocery expenses.

“Families are forced to buy less expensive, processed foods due to high prices,” she stated, emphasizing how these programs are a lifeline.

At the supper club, children acquire the skills to cook simple meals, which they can take home along with any extra ingredients.

“These cooking workshops equip children with lifelong skills,” Mr. Precious noted, adding, “Without this financial aid, providing such support would be impossible.”
