Labourer Earning ₹300 Daily Finds Diamond Worth ₹80 Lakh in Madhya Pradesh

Raju Gond, a daily wage labourer from Madhya Pradesh, has experienced a dramatic turn of fortune after discovering a massive 19.22-carat white diamond in the renowned Panna diamond mines. The diamond, which is anticipated to fetch approximately ₹80 lakh in an upcoming government auction, represents a life-changing find for Gond, who typically earns around ₹300 per day working in fields or driving tractors for local farmers.

Gond, aged 40, and his brother often invest ₹800 a day to search for valuable gems in a 690-square-foot plot of government land. Last Wednesday, their perseverance paid off when they unearthed the stunning diamond. "It shone spectacularly; I knew it was a diamond right then!" Gond recounted his excitement. The discovery was particularly meaningful for Gond, who had been searching for diamonds in the Panna region for a decade. "I worked the whole afternoon to get this stone, but it took me ten years to reach this point," he told the Indian Express.

Following the discovery, Gond and his brother promptly took the diamond to the local Panna Diamond Office for evaluation. Anupam Singh, the official diamond examiner, confirmed that the diamond is expected to sell for around ₹80 lakh. Singh noted that significant finds like these are rare, citing past discoveries such as a 54.55-carat diamond in 1961 and a 42-carat diamond in 2018.

For Gond, this find marks a significant shift in his fortunes. Having searched for diamonds in vain for years, he is now hopeful that the proceeds will ease his financial burdens. His immediate plans include paying off a ₹5 lakh loan and using the remaining funds to build a home and purchase farmland. "I want to ensure my children’s education is taken care of. This discovery gives me hope that my financial difficulties will lessen," he shared.

While the exact amount Gond will receive after government royalties and taxes is still uncertain, the diamond's sale is set to bring substantial change to his life.
