Next week, Kuwait will formalize a significant contract with the China Communications Construction Company to advance the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port initiative, as stated by Public Works Minister Noura Al-Mashaan. This pivotal ceremony will see attendance from Kuwait’s Prime Minister alongside delegates from China, underscoring the significance of the arrangement.
The agreement encompasses essential engineering, procurement, and construction tasks for the initial phase of the port, with a total contract value nearing 1.219 billion Kuwaiti dinars, marking it as one of the most substantial infrastructure deals in the nation.
Located on Bubiyan Island in northern Kuwait, the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port is recognized as a strategic national project, aimed at establishing a secure regional trade pathway and transforming Kuwait into a pivotal commercial center. China's involvement aligns with its Belt and Road Initiative, which focuses on enhancing global trade ties.
The Kuwaiti administration anticipates that this port will facilitate economic diversification, augment GDP growth, and reestablish Kuwait’s stature in regional commerce and finance. Officials have indicated that nearly half of the initial phase's construction is completed, although specific details on the upcoming work remain undisclosed.
This port development is part of broader initiatives that Kuwait is pursuing with Chinese collaboration, which includes projects such as power and water facilities, renewable energy solutions, waste recycling plants, and new residential communities. The strengthening of ties between Kuwait and China has been evident since several agreements were forged in 2023, highlighting an enriched economic partnership.
