According to officials, the operation began a few days ago based on intelligence about potential terrorist activities in the region. On July 24, security forces established contact with the terrorists, leading to an intense gunfight.
The Srinagar-based Chinar Corps, in a post on X, stated, “Based on specific input regarding the presence of terrorists in the general area of Kowut, Kupwara, a Joint Search Operation was launched by #IndianArmy and @JmuKmrPolice on the days leading up to July 23, 2024.” The post added that suspicious movements were detected on Tuesday, prompting troops to challenge the suspects. The terrorists responded with heavy fire, which led to a fierce exchange of gunfire.
“In the ensuing firefight, one terrorist was eliminated and a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) was injured. The operation is ongoing,” the Army reported on the social media platform. Unfortunately, the injured soldier later succumbed to his injuries.
The security forces are continuing their efforts in the area to ensure all threats are neutralized and to maintain peace and security in the region.
