Krishnaraja Sagar Dam Reaches Full Capacity, Brings Relief to Farmers
The Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) Dam, situated across the Cauvery River, has officially reached its Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 124.80 feet as of Wednesday, July 24, 2024. This significant milestone brings a wave of optimism to farmers and residents in the downstream areas, who have been eagerly awaiting the dam's increased capacity to support their agricultural needs.

On the morning of July 24, the reservoir level was recorded at 124.10 feet with a storage capacity of 48.475 thousand million cubic feet (tmc ft), against the gross capacity of 49.45 tmc ft. The inflow into the dam was measured at 31,852 cubic feet per second (cusecs), while the outflow had been reduced to 11,911 cusecs. This reduction in outflow allowed the dam to capture and store additional water, reaching the full reservoir level by the afternoon.
The achievement of the FRL is a notable improvement compared to the previous year. On July 24, 2023, the reservoir level was at 95 feet, with a storage capacity of 19.14 tmc ft. The current levels not only reflect a substantial increase in water storage but also highlight the effectiveness of recent rainfall and water management efforts.
The Krishnaraja Sagar Dam's full capacity is a crucial development for the downstream regions, where agriculture plays a vital role in the local economy. The additional water storage will ensure a more stable water supply for irrigation, helping to alleviate concerns related to water scarcity and boosting crop yields. This development is especially significant given the fluctuating rainfall patterns and water availability challenges faced by the region.
Authorities and water management officials have been closely monitoring the reservoir levels and inflow-outflow dynamics to ensure optimal usage of water resources. The reduction in outflow has been instrumental in allowing the dam to reach its maximum storage capacity, ensuring that the water resources are preserved for future use.
The full reservoir level also signifies positive changes in the overall water management strategy, reflecting the effective implementation of measures to optimize water storage and distribution. The reservoir's capacity to hold water at its full level demonstrates the system's resilience and ability to handle high inflows, providing a buffer against potential water shortages.
For farmers and residents, this achievement is more than just a numerical milestone; it represents a crucial resource for sustaining agricultural activities and supporting livelihoods. The availability of ample water resources is expected to have a direct impact on crop production, ensuring that the needs of the farming community are met throughout the growing season.
In summary, the attainment of the full reservoir level at the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam is a significant and positive development for the region. It underscores the successful management of water resources and offers much-needed support to the agricultural sector. The increased storage capacity will play a vital role in enhancing water security and supporting the economic well-being of communities reliant on the dam’s resources.
