In a major upset at the Miami Open, American tennis player Sebastian Korda defeated world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the third round on Sunday. Korda won the match 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, marking the biggest victory of his career.
Korda started strong, delivering an impressive performance in the first set. He fired 12 aces during the match and secured the opening set with confidence. In the second set, Korda looked set to finish the match while serving at 5-3, but Alcaraz made a strong comeback, breaking serve and eventually taking the set 7-5.
Despite losing momentum, Korda stayed composed in the deciding set. He broke Alcaraz’s serve to take a 4-3 lead and maintained control by holding his serve. The American sealed the win with an unreturnable serve on match point, showing great mental strength under pressure.
After the match, Korda said he was happy with his performance and his ability to stay focused during difficult moments. This victory also marks his first-ever win against a world number one player.
Alcaraz, who has been in strong form this year after winning the Australian Open, now holds a 17-2 record for the season. His only previous loss came against Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals of Indian Wells.
The Spanish star, who won the Miami Open title in 2022, will now shift focus to the upcoming clay court season, starting with the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Meanwhile, Korda advances to the round of 16, where he will face either Karen Khachanov or Martin Landaluce.
