Khaleda Zia, a pioneering figure in Bangladesh's politics and the country's first female prime minister, has died at the age of 80 after battling a serious illness. She had been hospitalized for weeks with complications such as kidney failure, heart disease, and pneumonia. Despite intensive medical intervention, her condition worsened, leading to her unfortunate demise.
Zia’s political journey began following the tragic assassination of her husband, Ziaur Rahman, in a military coup in 1981, which thrust her into leadership of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Previously recognized mainly as the president's wife, she quickly emerged as a prominent political figure.
In 1991, she made history by becoming Bangladesh’s first woman to hold the prime ministerial office after her party triumphed in the nation's first democratic election in two decades. This achievement was a landmark moment in Bangladesh’s political sphere, inspiring countless women throughout the country.
Her political trajectory was marked by her longstanding rivalry with Sheikh Hasina, the Awami League leader. This competition shaped Bangladesh’s political landscape for years, continually alternating power between the two leaders and contributing to a multi-party democratic system.
During her time in office, Zia championed women’s education and social progress, striving to fortify parliamentary democracy through bipartisan cooperation and constitutional reforms, thus enhancing the democratic fabric of the nation after decades of autocratic rule.
However, her career wasn't without strife. Her brief second term in 1996 was criticized over electoral disputes. Later, Zia faced corruption allegations, which she deemed politically motivated attempts to weaken the BNP.
Even while grappling with her health issues and legal challenges, Zia remained a pivotal figure in Bangladesh's opposition politics, serving as a symbol of resistance against the Awami League government, and sustaining the BNP's national prominence.
Recently, her son, Tarique Rahman, returned to Bangladesh after years in exile, reinvigorating the party's ambitions for power.
In her last moments, Zia was surrounded by family members, including Tarique, and was honored by supporters, who commemorated her legacy as a leading woman and a stalwart of democracy in Bangladesh.
Political figures and citizens nationwide have expressed their condolences, recognizing Khaleda Zia as a “great guardian” of democracy whose impact on the country’s political framework will always be remembered.
