Washington, D.C.: John Bolton, the former US National Security Advisor and veteran diplomat, appeared in federal court in Maryland on Friday, pleading not guilty to 18 counts of transmitting or retaining classified national defense information. The 76-year-old, known for his trademark bushy mustache and hawkish foreign policy stance, now faces serious legal scrutiny over his handling of top-secret material during his brief tenure in the White House.
Bolton’s career spans decades in Washington, from serving under Ronald Reagan to acting as US Ambassador to the United Nations under George W. Bush. Known for advocating a tough approach toward Iran, North Korea, and Venezuela, he has long been a polarizing figure in American foreign policy circles. His time as Trump’s national security advisor in 2018, however, marked a turbulent chapter in his career.
The appointment was unconventional from the start. Bolton, a product of a working-class Baltimore family and a Yale-educated lawyer, joined Donald Trump, a president skeptical of Washington bureaucracy and foreign entanglements. Their policy differences, especially regarding North Korea and Iran, quickly surfaced, leading to Bolton’s exit in September 2019. While Trump called it a firing, Bolton insisted he resigned.

Following his departure, Bolton’s memoir, The Room Where It Happened, criticized Trump’s intelligence, ethics, and competence, intensifying the former president’s ire. Since then, Bolton has remained a vocal critic, frequently appearing on news networks and writing in print about his concerns regarding Trump’s approach to governance.
Bolton joins a growing list of former Trump associates facing legal challenges, including ex-FBI director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James. Asked about Bolton’s indictment, Trump described him bluntly as a “bad guy,” offering little additional comment.
With the case now in motion, the coming weeks will reveal whether one of Washington’s most outspoken foreign policy figures will face accountability in court, or if his decades of experience navigating the corridors of power will shape a different outcome.
