In a significant ceremony held in Geneva, Switzerland, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi renewed her commitment to her role as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Eminent Advocate for Refugee Children for another two years. The event was attended by His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Humanitarian Envoy of The Big Heart Foundation (TBHF).
During the ceremony, Mr. Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, acknowledged the profound responsibility that Her Highness carries for the 47 million refugee children around the globe. He expressed his gratitude for her dedication, highlighting her significant contributions to improving the lives of refugees and displaced persons over the past decade.
In her acceptance speech, Sheikha Jawaher emphasized her ongoing commitment to advocating for refugee children, stating, "I have been committed to my mission as an advocate for refugee children for the past ten years, and I am honoured to renew that commitment for the next two years." She stressed that her role extends beyond a title; it embodies a deep-seated responsibility to address the pressing humanitarian challenges faced by these vulnerable populations.

Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi reinforced the significance of this title, stating, "This title is a role and a responsibility that 47 million refugee children residing in our world today have entrusted Her Highness with, and they could not have selected a better advocate." He called on both public and private sectors to integrate humanitarian efforts into their policies and programs, echoing the values instilled in the Emirate of Sharjah's leadership.
The ceremony was not only a formal recognition but also a platform to discuss the ongoing humanitarian crises affecting children worldwide, particularly in conflict zones like Palestine, Lebanon, and Sudan. Sheikha Jawaher addressed the urgency of these situations, stating, "We cannot attach the term ‘children’ to any identity or nationality. All the children of the world are our children!" She highlighted the plight of families displaced daily, underscoring the need for immediate support and aid.
During the event, the UNHCR presented Sheikha Jawaher with the Eminent Advocate Plaque, a symbol of her unwavering commitment to refugee issues. The renewal agreement, signed by Sheikha Jawaher and the High Commissioner, solidifies her role in championing the rights and welfare of refugee children globally.
As part of the ceremony, TBHF collaborated with UNHCR to organize a panel discussion titled "Leadership in Change: Education and Empowerment for Refugees in Africa." This session brought together dignitaries, diplomats, and representatives from various organizations to address the challenges faced by refugees, particularly in African nations like Malawi, Eswatini, and South Africa. The dialogue focused on enhancing educational opportunities and fostering empowerment initiatives for displaced individuals.
Sheikha Jawaher concluded her address with a heartfelt message, saying, "In the coming phase, TBHF, UNHCR, and our partners will launch specialized programs focused on empowering women, children, and youth in areas that most need our support." She emphasized the importance of education and sustainable change, inviting everyone to join in the efforts to create a more just, secure, and compassionate world.
The event marked another milestone in Her Highness’s ongoing humanitarian journey, which has seen her support more than six million people through emergency relief programs and sustainable development projects. Her dedication to women, children, and vulnerable communities is a testament to her vision of a world that embraces every individual, regardless of their circumstances.
As the humanitarian landscape continues to evolve, Sheikha Jawaher remains a vital advocate for refugee children, championing their rights and striving to provide them with the opportunities they deserve. The responsibility of advocating for these children is immense, but with the support of global organizations and communities, she aims to continue making a meaningful impact in their lives.
