West Java, Indonesia – January 2026:
A devastating landslide triggered by relentless heavy rainfall has struck villages in Indonesia’s West Java region, killing at least eight people and leaving more than 80 others missing, according to officials from the national disaster agency.
The disaster occurred in the early hours of Saturday in the West Bandung area, where torrential rains had been pounding the region since morning. Entire residential areas were buried under mud and debris as the unstable hillside collapsed, forcing residents to flee in panic.
Local resident Oyoh from Pasirlangu village recalled hearing a loud rumbling noise before the landslide struck. She said she was evacuated along with dozens of women and children, but several members of her family, including her niece, niece’s husband, and their two children, are still missing.
Authorities have launched an intensive search and rescue operation involving military personnel, police forces, volunteers, and local disaster response teams. Drones are being used to locate victims, while rescuers are manually digging through debris and spraying soil with water pumps to reduce the risk of further collapses. However, officials warned that rescue efforts are difficult due to unstable ground and hazardous terrain.
Indonesia frequently experiences floods and landslides during its rainy season, which typically lasts from October to March. The country’s geography and climate make it highly vulnerable to natural disasters, particularly during periods of heavy monsoon rainfall.
Environmental experts have also highlighted deforestation as a major contributing factor to such disasters. Forests play a crucial role in absorbing rainwater and stabilizing soil, but large-scale deforestation caused by mining, plantations, and fires has weakened natural land protection. Indonesia lost more than 240,000 hectares of primary forest in 2024 alone, according to conservation groups.
The government has recently taken action against companies responsible for environmental degradation, including filing lawsuits and revoking permits from several firms linked to deforestation and land misuse.
This latest tragedy follows a series of deadly floods and landslides across Indonesia in recent months, underlining the urgent need for stronger environmental protection measures and disaster preparedness systems.
