Israel's bombing of Gaza's Al-Mawasi using US-supplied JDAM bombs resulted in a devastating toll, marking one of the deadliest incidents in Gaza's nine-month conflict. The attack, targeting what Israel termed a "safe zone," left at least 92 dead and over 300 wounded, overwhelming nearby hospitals with casualties.
The Israeli military justified the strike as targeting two alleged masterminds behind an October 7 Hamas attack that escalated hostilities. Despite claiming to have killed a senior commander, uncertainties persisted regarding Hamas' military chief.
Footage from the scene depicted a massive explosion, creating a white mushroom cloud and leaving behind a substantial crater amid destroyed tents and buildings. Weapons experts identified remnants of a US-made Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) at the site, a precision-guided kit developed to enhance the accuracy of free-fall bombs.

Criticism mounted over the use of such powerful munitions in densely populated Gaza, prompting calls for reconsideration of US arms supplies to Israel. The Biden administration initially paused some deliveries but recently resumed supplying smaller bombs amid global outcry.
The White House expressed concern over civilian casualties, urging Israel to minimize collateral damage. In response, Israeli officials defended the strike, asserting it targeted a Hamas compound rather than a civilian area.
Humanitarian groups condemned the attack, describing Al-Mawasi as a site of "absolute destruction" lacking essential services like water and electricity. Hamas criticized the US for indirectly enabling Israel's actions, accusing Washington of contributing to a humanitarian crisis.
Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire and prisoner exchange faltered as Hamas cited ongoing Israeli strikes as reasons for withdrawing from indirect talks.
The conflict, sparked by Hamas' October 7 attack on Israel, has resulted in significant casualties on both sides, with civilian deaths drawing international scrutiny and calls for de-escalation.
