Israeli Forces Strike Central Gaza, Move Tanks to Rafah Border

Over the past 24 hours, Israeli airstrikes have inflicted heavy casualties in Gaza, with at least 81 Palestinians killed and 198 wounded, according to the Gaza health ministry. The strikes targeted multiple locations across the Gaza Strip, including Rafah, where two people were killed. Israeli tanks also conducted a raid in northern Rafah before withdrawing, part of ongoing military operations.

The Israeli military described their operations as precise and intelligence-driven, claiming to have eliminated a terrorist cell and a launcher used to target Israeli troops. Airstrikes hit 25 targets throughout Gaza, and ground troops continued operations in central areas to dismantle observation structures.

Despite nine months of conflict, Palestinian factions, primarily Hamas, continue to launch anti-tank rockets, mortar bombs, and sporadic rocket barrages into Israel. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant stated that military efforts have achieved significant gains, creating conditions conducive to negotiating the return of hostages, referencing recent developments in the conflict.

Israel has intensified its efforts against Hamas since an attack in October 7, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and the capture of over 250 hostages, according to Israeli reports. The military claimed to have eliminated half of Hamas' military leadership and neutralized approximately 14,000 fighters since the conflict began, reducing their estimated fighting force by half.

In response to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where at least 38,000 Palestinians have died in Israeli retaliatory actions, the U.S. military announced the cessation of its mission to operate a temporary floating pier for humanitarian aid shipments. The effort, which directed 20 million pounds of aid to Gaza over sporadic 20-day operations due to weather disruptions, will now transition to the Israeli port of Ashdod.
