Renewed Unrest in Iran Following Internet Shutdown Amid Protests

Iran is experiencing its most significant protests in years, now extending into a 13th day, coinciding with a stringent internet blackout. The unrest, which originated from economic struggles, has intensified into broader demands for the end of the Islamic Republic, with some citizens even calling for a return to monarchical rule. Reports indicate at least 48 protesters and 14 security personnel have lost their lives, with thousands detained.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has denounced the demonstrators as 'troublemakers' aimed at aligning with the US, accusing foreign nations of stoking the crisis. Concurrently, Iran addressed the United Nations Security Council, attributing acts of violence and vandalism to US intervention.

US President Donald Trump has cautioned Iran, indicating they are 'in big trouble' and threatening severe consequences if protesters are harmed, while refraining from sending troops. He also remarked on the unexpected control protesters have gained over certain cities.

The internet blackout, initiated on Thursday, has created significant disruptions, preventing cash machines from functioning and heightening public distress as essential goods become inaccessible. Human rights organizations warn of escalating brutality and a potential for mass casualties.

International leaders from the UK, Germany, and France have condemned the violence against protesters, urging Iran to uphold the right to peaceful protest and respect human rights. The United Nations echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the government's duty to ensure safety.

Iran's security forces have escalated their rhetoric, labeling protesters as 'armed vandals' and threatening legal repercussions against any assaults on governmental or military entities. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has vowed to continue its efforts until the complete annihilation of what they term the enemy's agendas.

Protests are sweeping across Iran, with crowds vocalizing their discontent towards the regime. Instances of fire and violence have been reported in various locations. Families of the deceased are stepping forward to identify their loved ones amidst stringent media restrictions within Iran.

This surge in protests represents the largest threat to the regime since the tragic 2022 protests triggered by Mahsa Amini's death in custody. That turmoil resulted in numerous casualties and detentions, leading to heightened fears of another intense crackdown.
