Washington, United States: Iran can produce fissile material for a nuclear weapon within "one or two weeks," US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated on Friday. This announcement follows the recent election of President Masoud Pezeshkian, who aims to "get Iran out of its isolation" and supports reviving the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and global powers.
Blinken remarked that "in the last weeks and months, Iran has been advancing" its nuclear program. The US unilaterally withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018, which was designed to control Iran's atomic activities in exchange for lifting international sanctions. Speaking at a security forum in Colorado, Blinken attributed the acceleration in Iran's nuclear capabilities to the collapse of the deal.

"Instead of being at least a year away from producing fissile material for a nuclear weapon, Iran is now probably one or two weeks away from doing that," Blinken said, noting that Iran had not yet developed a nuclear weapon.
Iran's acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri told CNN earlier this week that Iran remains committed to the JCPOA. "We are still a member of the JCPOA. America has not yet returned to the JCPOA, so our goal is to revive the 2015 agreement," he stated. "We are not seeking a new agreement."
Bagheri emphasized, "Neither I nor anyone else in Iran has discussed or will discuss a new agreement. We have an agreement from 2015."
Blinken's comments came shortly after reports that the US Secret Service increased security for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump weeks ago, following an alleged Iranian plot to kill him.
