Taiwan is actively observing what it calls "abnormal" shifts in China’s military hierarchy, prompted by news that two of its senior generals are under investigation. Defence Minister Wellington Koo announced that Taiwan will utilize various approaches to decipher Beijing’s motives amidst these unprecedented internal scrutiny.
On Saturday, China disclosed that Zhang Youxia, the vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and a senior military official under President Xi Jinping, is being investigated for serious disciplinary violations. Another high-ranking official, Liu Zhenli, is likewise facing inquiry.
Such significant probes into top military figures are rare within China’s political landscape. This action could indicate potential internal strife within the People’s Liberation Army or signify President Xi Jinping’s attempts to reinforce control over the military during a pivotal time of geopolitical uncertainty.
Taiwan’s Defence Ministry highlighted the crucial nature of scrutinizing these occurrences, as any shifts in power dynamics within China’s military may have dire consequences for regional security. Due to Taiwan’s geographic proximity and ongoing security concerns regarding China, the nation remains alert to any developments that might disrupt peace in the Taiwan Strait.
Investigating Zhang Youxia, who holds close ties to President Xi, hints that China’s leadership may be grappling with issues surrounding discipline or loyalty at elite levels. This move might reflect wider efforts to consolidate authority and ensure that the military aligns with the strategic objectives of the central government.
Global observers are paying close attention to these unfolding investigations, especially as they occur in a climate where China faces mounting international scrutiny and Taiwan is enhancing its defense preparedness.
The intricate situation adds layers to the already complex cross-strait relations, raising concerns about the stability and potential trajectory of China’s military leadership.
