Inter Milan held Manchester City to a 0-0 draw in a gripping Champions League clash at the Etihad Stadium, a result that provided some measure of revenge for their narrow defeat to City in the 2023 final.

The match was a thrilling, back-and-forth encounter with both teams creating numerous chances but failing to capitalize. Manchester City struggled to break down Inter Milan's resolute defense, while Simone Inzaghi's side, dangerous on the counter-attack, were guilty of poor finishing on a tense evening.

City's prolific striker Erling Haaland, who was poised to become the fastest player in history to reach 100 goals for a European club, came close but failed to score. Haaland missed several opportunities, including a first-half header that was saved on the line by Inter’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer and a powerful low shot that narrowly missed the post. The Norwegian, who has already netted nine goals in four Premier League games this season, will have to wait for his milestone.

Inter Milan's Henrikh Mkhitaryan nearly handed City a gift when he missed a crucial late opportunity, sending a powerful shot over the bar from about eight meters out. His frustration was palpable as he held his head in disbelief.

On the other side, Ilkay Gundogan came agonizingly close to scoring for City in the dying minutes, missing two close-range headers. The first header was directly at Sommer, while the second glanced over the bar just before the final whistle.

Despite City firing 22 shots compared to Inter's 13, they only managed one more shot on target, ending with five to Inter’s four. The result keeps City at the top of the Premier League table with a perfect record after four games, while Inter Milan is positioned third in Serie A.

One of the night’s concerns for City was an injury to captain Kevin De Bruyne, who appeared to sustain a knock late in the first half and did not return for the second half. City’s next challenge is a high-stakes match against Arsenal on Sunday, who are just two points behind them in the league.

In last season’s Champions League, City edged out Inter 1-0 to claim the trophy, completing their treble, but were later eliminated by Real Madrid in the quarter-finals. Inter, meanwhile, were knocked out by Atletico Madrid in the round of 16.
