New Delhi, experiencing a severe heatwave, saw temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius, a deviation of seven degrees from seasonal norms. The absence of thunderstorms and rainfall, typically induced by western disturbances, exacerbated the heatwave conditions.
Further west, in Jammu and Kashmir, Katra recorded 40.8 degrees Celsius, while Jammu sweltered at 44.3 degrees. Daltonganj in Jharkhand witnessed scorching temperatures reaching 46 degrees Celsius, surpassing normal levels by 9.1 degrees.
The IMD defines a heatwave when temperatures reach at least 40 degrees Celsius in plains, 37 degrees in coastal areas, and 30 degrees in hilly regions, with a departure from normal of at least 4.5 degrees. Conditions escalate to severe heatwave status if the deviation exceeds 6.4 degrees.
Most parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, western Rajasthan, western Uttar Pradesh, and eastern Madhya Pradesh experienced unusually warm nights with minimum temperatures exceeding normal levels by 5.1 degrees or more.
The weather forecast indicates that maximum temperatures in northwest India are expected to remain unchanged over the next 24 hours, followed by a slight decrease of 2 degrees Celsius thereafter. Central and eastern parts of the country are likely to endure high temperatures for the next three days, with some relief anticipated thereafter.
Punjab and Haryana continued to endure relentless heatwave conditions, with Bathinda recording a scorching 46.9 degrees Celsius. In Haryana's Jind district, Pindara also reported the same extreme temperature, making it the hottest place in the state. Chandigarh recorded 44.5 degrees Celsius, while Faridkot in Punjab sweltered at 46 degrees, and Pathankot at 45.8 degrees.
In Haryana, Faridabad and Sirsa recorded maximum temperatures of 46.6 degrees Celsius and 46.2 degrees, respectively, with Mahendragarh and Hisar also experiencing intense heat.
Rajasthan faced intensified heatwave conditions, with several places recording temperatures one to six notches higher than previous days. Ganganagar recorded the highest temperature in the state at 46.2 degrees Celsius, followed by Pilani at 45.9 degrees. Churu, Karauli, Dholpur, Alwar, Bikaner, Bharatpur, and Phalodi also reported temperatures above 44 degrees Celsius.
The IMD highlighted that minimum temperatures across Rajasthan were notably higher than normal, contributing to the overall heatwave conditions. Cities like Jaipur, Pilani, Churu, and Karauli experienced nighttime temperatures ranging between 28.6 and 37 degrees Celsius, significantly above seasonal averages.
As the heatwave persists, authorities are cautioning residents to take necessary precautions to mitigate the effects of extreme temperatures, while relief measures are being closely monitored amid the ongoing weather conditions.
