The Indianapolis Colts watched their season tilt sharply on Sunday as quarterback Daniel Jones went down with a right Achilles injury during a 36-19 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. His reaction on the field—slamming his helmet before limping away—captured the frustration of a team suddenly losing its grip on the AFC South race.
Jones, who had already been playing through a broken bone in his left leg, collapsed after an incomplete pass late in the first half. He immediately grabbed the back of his right leg, raising fears of a serious, potentially season-ending setback. He was later seen on the sideline with a walking boot, unable to return.
The Colts, now 8-5, turned to Riley Leonard, but the tone of the day had shifted. Jacksonville seized control early, extending its home winning streak against Indianapolis to 11 games and pushing the Colts further into a late-season slide. Indianapolis has now dropped three straight and four of its last five.
Before the injury troubles mounted, Jones had been central to the Colts’ strong 7-1 start. Signed to a one-year deal in the offseason, he beat out Anthony Richardson in training camp and sparked a revived offense. But the last few weeks showed a noticeable decline in mobility and accuracy as he battled the leg fracture. Against Jacksonville, he completed only five passes before exiting.
Leonard stepped in with energy, finishing 18 of 29 for 145 yards with a rushing touchdown, but the deficit and the moment felt too large to overcome. The Colts’ challenges grow from here: Seattle, San Francisco, Jacksonville again, and Houston remain on the schedule—four teams all fighting for playoff positioning.
Indianapolis now faces an unsettling reality. With Richardson already on injured reserve and Brett Rypien available only on the practice squad, the quarterback depth is dangerously thin. And if Jones’ recovery extends into the offseason, questions about the team’s future under center may arrive sooner than expected.
Sunday was supposed to be a crucial divisional test. Instead, it became a turning point that may define the Colts’ season—for reasons no one in Indianapolis wanted.
