On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the service of India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train, creating a vital route linking Howrah near Kolkata with Kamakhya Junction in Guwahati. This innovative overnight train enhances connectivity between West Bengal and Assam, which are both gearing up for elections.
The train began its journey from Malda Town in West Bengal, with the virtual launch of the return journey from Guwahati to Howrah.
Catering to increasing travel demands, the fully air-conditioned Vande Bharat sleeper train is designed to offer an airline-like experience at reasonable prices. Travelers can expect a time reduction of approximately 2.5 hours on the Howrah–Guwahati route, making long-distance trips faster, safer, and more enjoyable. Additionally, this service aims to boost religious tourism in the area.
With a maximum speed of 180 km/h and operational speeds between 120-130 km/h, the train is equipped with ergonomic berths for a comfortable experience, featuring an advanced suspension system. The latest disinfectant technology effectively eradicates 99% of germs, and passengers are provided with fresh linens and towels. Safety is prioritized with the indigenous Kavach automatic protection system and onboard surveillance. Automatic sliding doors remain closed during transit and open exclusively at designated stops.
Passengers will savor local cuisines included in their ticket fare. Assamese delicacies will be served on the journey from Kamakhya to Howrah, while Bengali dishes will be available on the return leg.
Ticket prices range from Rs 2,300 to Rs 3,600, contingent on the class of travel. The launch of this service signifies a significant upgrade in the modernization of India's rail network, merging speed, safety, comfort, and local culinary delights for travelers.
