Authorities in India have confirmed that the family of Sajid Akram, one of the attackers involved in the tragic shooting at Bondi Beach, had no insight into his radical ideologies or activities. Officials emphasized that there is no evidence connecting his radicalization to India or any local influences from his home state of Telangana.

The incident occurred during a Hanukkah celebration on Sunday and is being labeled as Australia’s most severe mass shooting in almost three decades. The attack is regarded as terrorism targeting the Jewish community, resulting in the deaths of sixteen individuals, including Sajid Akram, who was killed by law enforcement.

Aged 50, Sajid Akram migrated to Australia in 1998. His son, Naveed Akram, 24, was also implicated in the event and is believed to be an accomplice. Naveed remains in critical condition after being shot by police.

Telangana state police issued a statement on Tuesday, clarifying that Sajid Akram, originally from Hyderabad, had minimal contact with his family in India. Family members communicated to authorities that they were entirely unaware of any extremist thoughts or plans, as well as the factors that may have contributed to his radicalization.

Investigations have confirmed that Sajid Akram made six trips to India since relocating to Australia, primarily for family-related reasons. Authorities noted that there were no criminal records or negative encounters during his time spent in India before and after migration.

Notably, Australian officials confirmed that both Sajid and his son recently traveled to the Philippines. Sajid used an Indian passport for this trip while Naveed traveled with an Australian passport. The reasons behind this visit remain under scrutiny. It is yet undetermined if they had ties to extremist factions or were exposed to radical training during this time.

Telangana authorities asserted that, based on available information, the radicalization of both individuals does not appear to have any ties to India. They highlighted the absence of local support or involvement from Hyderabad or elsewhere within the state.

This clarification arrives amid concerns regarding international links and cross-border extremism following such incidents. Indian authorities are emphasizing the necessity for factual investigations to prevent unwarranted accusations against families or communities.

As Australian investigations persist, Indian police assure full cooperation if further information is required. Currently, officials reaffirm that the gunman’s family in India holds no responsibility, prior knowledge, or warning signs regarding the tragic violence that unfolded so far away.
