Authorities in New Jersey have taken a 35-year-old woman of Indian origin into custody after charging her with the tragic deaths of her two young sons, igniting profound shock across the community.
The individual in question, identified as Priyatharsini Natarajan from Hillsborough Township, was arrested following a distressing call received by emergency services on January 13. The call was made by a man believed to be the father of the children.
At approximately 6:45 pm, upon returning home from work, the man contacted 911, expressing that he discovered his two sons, ages five and seven, unconscious in their home. He implied that his wife was involved in the alarming incident.
Upon arrival, police officers found both Natarajan and the caller at the residence. Entering the home, they sadly discovered the two boys unresponsive in their bedroom.
Attempted life-saving measures by medical personnel were regrettably unsuccessful, and the children were pronounced dead at the scene.
In an official statement on Wednesday, Somerset County Prosecutor John McDonald affirmed that evidence suggests Natarajan is responsible for her children's deaths, though specific details regarding the circumstances and methods have yet to be revealed.
The identities of the boys remain confidential at this time. Names will be released following verification by the Medical Examiner’s Office, adhering to legal standards.
Natarajan has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of unlawful weapon possession. The details regarding the weapon involved in this case have not been disclosed by prosecutors.
After her arrest, she was taken to Somerset County Jail, where she awaits a detention hearing to determine her bail status.
An intensive investigation is being conducted in collaboration with various law enforcement agencies, including the Hillsborough Township Police and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office.
Authorities have secured the residence and commenced a forensic investigation. A scheduled postmortem will ascertain the children's identities and the exact cause of their demise, vital to the ongoing legal proceedings.
Prosecutor McDonald stated that the investigation remains active, promising updates when necessary, as evidence is collected and the family connections examined.
This distressing case has sparked widespread concern due to the youth of the victims and the nature of the allegations. Officials have asked the community to refrain from speculation as the legal process unfolds.
So far, there are no details regarding potential motives or mental health factors being investigated, but these elements will be thoroughly explored.
If found guilty, Natarajan could face a sentence of life imprisonment under New Jersey law. This case is expected to progress through the court system shortly, with prosecutors preparing their case for trial.
Law enforcement has reiterated their dedication to a fair investigation, while prioritizing the privacy of those impacted by this tragic event.
