In the wake of the horrific rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, the Supreme Court has sharply criticized the West Bengal government and has formed a panel to review and improve the safety protocols for medical professionals across India. The case has triggered widespread protests and a strike by doctors demanding better protection and justice.
Following the tragic incident involving a Kolkata doctor, which has sent shockwaves through the medical community, the Central Government-run Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital initially announced the end of its strike. However, just hours later, the resident doctors reversed their decision, deciding to continue their strike in solidarity with other resident doctors’ associations across the country. These groups have been protesting for over a week, calling for the implementation of a central law to enhance safety measures for doctors.

The Supreme Court's intervention came as a significant relief to the protesting medical professionals. The Court has constituted a 10-member task force tasked with creating a national protocol aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of doctors. This panel is expected to submit an interim report within three weeks and a final report within two months. The move is intended to address the urgent need for comprehensive safety measures and to provide clarity on protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
The Supreme Court's decision has been met with approval from various bodies representing resident doctors, who have agreed to hold a pan-India meeting to discuss the continuation of their strike. The striking doctors are pressing for a swift and transparent investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the Kolkata murder and are advocating for the creation of a Central Protection Act to safeguard medical professionals working in hospitals.
As the strike entered its ninth day, the medical community remains resolute in their demand for justice and improved safety regulations. The ongoing protests reflect the deep concern within the healthcare sector over the need for better protection and support for those on the front lines of medical care.
