Major Indian airlines, such as Air India and IndiGo, are urgently inspecting their fleet of Airbus A320-family aircraft in response to an emergency airworthiness directive issued by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). This directive follows a serious midair incident that raised alarms over the flight control system's safety found in thousands of Airbus jets globally.
Immediately after the alert, both airlines began thorough inspections, with assurances to passengers that necessary updates would be finalized by day's end, causing minimal disruptions. Officials noted that any delays resulting from these checks would not surpass 30 minutes.
The EASA directive currently grounds around 6,000 Airbus A320-family aircraft worldwide, including the A318, A319, A320, and A321 models, prevalent for both domestic and international flights.
India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) also issued a critical notice mandating airlines to inspect and replace a vital component, referred to as "ATA 27," which is associated with flight controls and the elevator aileron computer.
Air India confirmed that its engineering teams have been tirelessly working to complete necessary updates on affected aircraft, stating over 40 percent of their fleet has already complied with the requirements. The airline expressed confidence in adhering to the EASA deadline, clarifying there were no flight cancellations linked to these safety procedures.
As the leading operator of A320-family aircraft in India, IndiGo reported that it had finalized updates on 160 of its 200 aircraft, with plans to have the remaining fleet compliant within the required timeframe to ensure passenger safety and reliability.
This urgent safety directive was triggered by a concerning incident last month involving an Airbus A320 that unexpectedly pitched nose-down during a flight from Cancun to Newark, despite no pilot input. The aircraft, flying at 35,000 feet, made a safe diversion to Tampa, revealing significant safety risks.
Investigations pinpointed a fault in the elevator aileron computer (ELAC), an essential system for translating pilot commands into wing and tail movements. Airbus identified that intense solar radiation might corrupt data in the ELAC’s newer software, potentially leading to uncommanded actions and structural stress.
Airbus has mandated that any aircraft equipped with the earlier ELAC version must upgrade to the safer ELAC L103 Plus before any commercial flight. Only short repositioning flights without passengers are allowed to move aircraft to maintenance facilities.
The aviation industry is closely monitoring this issue, and authorities are prioritizing safety. Both Indian airlines affected by this directive have reassured customers that their fleets remain safe and operational, with updates progressing swiftly.
