Planning holidays in advance can save money, reduce stress, and allow people to enjoy their breaks to the fullest. For 2026, a long-weekend calendar is already circulating online, helping travellers and working professionals mark key holidays, festival breaks, and potential long weekends across the year.
This calendar highlights when taking an additional leave day can turn a short weekend into an extended break, perfect for trips or family time. Here’s a month-wise guide for India’s long weekends in 2026.
January: Start the Year with Extended Breaks
The first long stretch of 2026 occurs from January 1–4. New Year’s Day falls on a Thursday, so taking Friday off can create a four-day weekend.
Makar Sankranti is on January 14, giving another short break.
Later in the month, January 23–26 creates a longer window. Vasant Panchami on the 23rd combines with the weekend and Republic Day on Monday, giving travellers multiple days to relax or plan trips.
February: Mid-Month Pause
Mahashivratri falls on February 15, giving a chance for a mid-month rest. Towards the end of the month, February 28 connects to the Holi week that follows, making the end of February a good time to plan a vacation.
March: Festivals Spread Across the Month
March begins on a Sunday, with Holi on March 3. This creates a four-day break when paired with the last weekend of February.
March 20–22 marks Eid al-Fitr, offering another long weekend. Later, March 26–31 creates a window for travel. Ram Navami falls on Thursday; taking Friday off gives a long break that extends into the weekend, and the period before Mahavir Jayanti on Monday adds further options.
April to June: Multiple Opportunities for Holidays
April is highlighted by Good Friday and Ram Navami, giving long weekend possibilities. Summer holidays and school breaks make this a popular time for family trips.
May brings Labour Day on May 1, and some states celebrate Buddha Purnima, allowing workers to plan a few extra days off.
June is quieter but still offers a few short weekends, ideal for mini-getaways or city breaks.
July to September: Festive Season Approaches
July sees local festivals like Rath Yatra in some states. August is particularly travel-friendly with Independence Day on August 15 and Raksha Bandhan, which, if combined with weekends, can create long breaks.
September features Ganesh Chaturthi, giving a few more travel windows, especially for short trips within India.
October to December: Year-End Holidays
October brings Dussehra, and the Diwali festival in November offers some of the longest holiday windows of the year. Taking a few additional leave days around Diwali can extend the celebrations significantly.
December ends the year with Christmas and New Year’s Eve, giving travellers another chance for long holidays or year-end trips.
Tips for Travellers
Book Early: Long weekends attract high demand for flights and hotels, so booking early helps save money.
Plan Leave Wisely: Combining festival holidays with a single leave day can maximize vacation time.
Check State Holidays: Some festivals are observed in specific states, so confirm local holidays before planning trips.
By planning early using this 2026 long-weekend calendar, travellers can enjoy stress-free holidays and make the most of their time off. Whether it’s a family trip, a short city getaway, or a festival celebration, knowing the holiday clusters helps everyone plan better.
