In response to escalating security concerns, India has decided to close two additional visa application centers in Bangladesh. This action follows a rise in protests and anti-India remarks across various regions.

Incident Overview

The visa centers in Rajshahi and Khulna have been shut down, following the earlier closure of the center in Dhaka. A notification revealed that these centers were closed due to the current security landscape.

Closure Timing

The decision to close the centers occurred on December 18, 2025, just one day after a protest march near the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.

Protest Details

Protesters affiliated with “July Oikya” gathered around the Indian High Commission, with some speakers expressing strong anti-India sentiments. Following the protests, India assessed the situation and opted to close the visa facilities for safety reasons.

Individuals with scheduled appointments will be notified of rescheduled dates soon.

Government Response

India has expressed alarm over the increasing hate speech directed at it, particularly concerning its northeastern regions, often referred to as the “seven sisters.”

However, Bangladesh's Foreign Affairs Advisor, Touhid Hossain, has dismissed these concerns, asserting that the student leader behind the remarks is not connected to the government, and claimed that the nation’s law and order situation remains stable.

Political Context

The remarks have been linked to a leader from the National Citizens Party, which gained traction during student-led protests last year that led to the ousting of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. The party currently supports the interim leadership of Muhammad Yunus.

Some extremist factions associated with this group have issued threats against Indian officials residing in Bangladesh.

Election Outlook

India has urged Bangladesh to maintain peaceful and impartial elections. In response, the interim government indicated its refusal of external input regarding the electoral process.

Observers caution that radical elements may seek to disrupt elections by inciting unrest and assigning blame to India.

Despite the tensions voiced by certain groups, India remains measured in its response. However, due to noted safety risks, India closes visa centers in Bangladesh as a preventative action. As political tensions escalate, the situation continues to be monitored.
