US President Donald Trump has revealed a substantial hike in tariffs on products imported from South Korea, increasing them from 15% to 25%. This measure affects a wide array of items, including automobiles, lumber, pharmaceuticals, and various goods linked to reciprocal tariffs.
During a press conference, Trump criticized South Korea for allegedly failing to adhere to the trade agreement established with the US last year. He pointed out that while the US moved swiftly to lower tariffs as per the terms, South Korean lawmakers have been sluggish in ratifying the deal.
In response, South Korean officials noted they had not received formal communication about the tariff increase and requested immediate negotiations with the US to settle the issue. Kim Jung-kwan, South Korea's Industry Minister, who is currently in Canada, is scheduled to travel to Washington for talks with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
After the announcement, South Korea's Kospi stock index saw an initial decline but later rebounded, ending the day up approximately 1.8%, boosted by major exporters' shares.
The trade agreement, initialed in October last year, promised South Korea would invest $350 billion in the US, with some funds targeted for the shipbuilding sector. The US, in turn, agreed to lower tariffs on specific items once South Korea commenced its legislative approval process. The deal was submitted for consideration to South Korea’s National Assembly in late November, with hopes for passage by February.
Tariffs are essentially taxes on imported goods, and with this increase, American companies bringing in South Korean products will now face a 25% tax, raising the cost of these imports.
During his second term, President Trump has frequently leveraged tariffs to propel his foreign policy ambitions. Recently, he threatened to enforce a 100% tariff on Canadian goods if it pursued trade negotiations with China, prompting diplomatic clarifications from both nations.
Furthermore, Trump has previously signaled potential tariffs against several nations, including the UK, concerning his contentious plans regarding Greenland, a self-governing part of Denmark and a NATO ally. He later withdrew the Greenland tariff threat, but it stirred tensions with Denmark and other NATO partners.
