Storm Byron has severely impacted the Gaza Strip, taking the lives of at least 14 individuals while injuring many as gale-force winds and torrential rain wreak havoc on vulnerable homes and shelters. According to Gaza's Ministry of Interior and National Security, a tragic incident occurred overnight where five people perished when a house housing displaced civilians in Bir an-Naaja collapsed.
In the early hours, two more lives were lost in the Remal district of Gaza City when a wall fell onto makeshift tents. A day earlier, a person was killed in Shati refugee camp, and a newborn succumbed to the freezing conditions in al-Mawasi. Hospitals are witnessing an alarming spike in deaths attributed to cold exposure. Among the casualties at al-Shifa Hospital was nine-year-old Hadeel al-Masri, who died in a shelter, and baby Taim al-Khawaja, who lost his life in Shati camp. Additionally, in Khan Younis, eight-month-old Rahaf Abu Jazar also died after rain inundated her family's tent.
Family members disclosed that the baby’s family had been residing in a structurally compromised house after their original home was destroyed by an Israeli airstrike. Rescue teams equipped with heavy machinery are working through rubble in Beit Lahiya, persistently searching for survivors beneath collapsed buildings.
Reports from Al Jazeera highlight that the storm has transformed temporary shelters into perilous structures. Authorities are alerting that further floods, rain, and hail could affect approximately 850,000 people, including countless children residing in 761 shelters. The destruction of tents is leaving families without safe lodging, and significant portions of the shoreline have given way, endangering tents positioned near the sea.
A majority of Palestinians in Gaza now find themselves homeless, with at least 10 properties crumbling in the last 24 hours. Survivors persist in unsafe dwellings, as there are no tents or alternative accommodations available, compounded by Israel’s blockade on winter aid supplies. Civil defence teams are responding to over 4,300 emergency calls, having reported at least 12 collapses of homes previously damaged by airstrikes.
Rescue operations are ongoing, yet teams face challenges due to scarcity of fuel and equipment. The Ministry of Interior has called for international assistance to compel Israel to permit aid and shelter materials into Gaza. Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem characterized the storm-related casualties as part of a continuing “war of extermination,” further emphasizing the dire living situations stemming from past bombardments. He has called for swift global intervention to ensure adequate shelter and protection from rain and cold for those affected.
