Tokyo, Japan – In Japan, more than 18,000 older adults with dementia went missing last year, with nearly 500 found dead. Cases have doubled since 2012, highlighting a growing national challenge. As nearly 30% of the population is aged 65 and above, Japan faces a complex crisis fueled by a shrinking workforce and limited foreign caregivers.
The government estimates dementia-related health and social care costs will soar to 14 trillion yen ($90 billion) by 2030, up from nine trillion yen in 2025. In response, technology is increasingly seen as a lifeline.
Tech Steps In
Across the country, GPS-based systems track vulnerable individuals. Wearable tags alert authorities when someone strays from a safe zone, while convenience-store staff in some towns receive real-time notifications to help locate missing persons quickly.
Early detection technology is also gaining traction. Fujitsu’s aiGait monitors walking patterns and posture to identify early signs of dementia, giving doctors actionable data to intervene sooner. Meanwhile, Waseda University is developing AIREC, a 150kg humanoid robot that can assist with daily activities such as cooking, laundry, and dressing, potentially reducing the burden on human caregivers in the future.
Smaller devices, like Sharp’s Poketomo, provide emotional support by reminding users to take medication, offering conversation, and easing isolation for those living alone. Night monitoring systems and robotic assistants in care homes help track residents’ sleep and guide simple exercises, freeing human staff for more meaningful interactions.
Community and Connection Matter
Despite technological advances, human engagement remains central. Tokyo’s Restaurant of Mistaken Orders offers dementia patients a chance to work, socialize, and stay active. Toshio Morita, a server there, uses flowers to track orders despite cognitive decline, finding joy and purpose in daily interactions. His wife finds comfort in the respite and support the café provides.
While robots and AI offer relief, the story of cafés like these underscores that human connection, community, and purposeful engagement remain irreplaceable. For Japan, a balanced approach combining technology with social interventions could shape the future of dementia care.
