Political upheaval grips Honduras as protests in Tegucigalpa have halted a special recount of ballots from the presidential election held on November 30. This hand recount, which encompasses roughly 15% of total votes, has the potential to sway the outcome between the leading candidates.
Ana Paola Hall, the head of the National Electoral Council, reported that numerous supporters of the ruling LIBRE party obstructed access to the facility where the ballots are secured. Consequently, election officials were unable to commence the recount. Hall elaborated on X (formerly Twitter) that the demonstration “created conditions unsuitable for the necessary recount to initiate.”
Former President Mel Zelaya, spouse to current President Xiomara Castro, has urged LIBRE supporters to persist in their protests and insisted on a manual recount of all ballots from the election.
Initial results indicate conservative National Party candidate Nasry Asfura is leading with 40.54% of the votes, followed closely by center-right Liberal Party candidate Salvador Nasralla with 39.19%. Rixi Moncada of the ruling LIBRE party is at 19.29%.
The ballots under special recount may shift the advantage between Asfura and Nasralla. While election day voting proceeded without major disturbances, the counting phase has been tumultuous, marked by technical snags and political strife fueling delays and confusion.
Foreign interference has also played a significant role. Former U.S. President Donald Trump openly supported Asfura, threatened aid withdrawals if another candidate emerged victorious, and alleged election fraud without providing proof.
Honduras stands at a pivotal juncture. Ongoing protests and delays have thrown the nation into political stagnation, leaving citizens uncertain about their next leader. A fair and transparent recount is crucial to rebuild public confidence and avert further discord.
The upcoming days will be critical. Honduran authorities must guarantee that the recount proceeds securely and transparently, allowing the nation to progress beyond this fraught electoral climate.
