Federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson has publicly apologized to Coastal First Nations following remarks that were perceived as dismissive during talks about a possible meeting. The apology surfaced approximately a day after he suggested that the alliance's president, Marilyn Slett, could simply attend virtually if she couldn't be there in person.
The Coastal First Nations alliance comprises nine Nations situated along the northern coast of British Columbia. They have consistently opposed the notion of transporting bitumen through their territory, concerns that have been rekindled with a new federal and Alberta agreement outlining a potential pipeline route.
Slett voiced her concerns regarding the proposed meeting's timing and location and stated that attending in person was unfeasible. In a response that garnered immediate criticism, Hodgson remarked, “It’s called Zoom,” which seemed to diminish the importance of direct engagement for the Nation.
By the next day, Hodgson acknowledged the comment as a misstep and reached out to the alliance to express his regrets while affirming his willingness to meet in person at a mutually agreeable time and place.
In his statement, Hodgson characterized his earlier comment as a “poor choice of words,” reiterating his commitment to fostering a constructive relationship with the alliance leaders. He emphasized that in-person discussions are crucial for addressing pipeline concerns and the broader impact on their lands and rights.
Hodgson also expressed readiness to travel to the community, highlighting that respectful consultation is vital as discussions about major energy projects progress. Representatives of Coastal First Nations have not yet confirmed whether a new meeting will take place.
