On December 31, Khokon Das, a 50-year-old Hindu man, faced a brutal assault in Bangladesh’s Shariatpur district when he was violently attacked and set on fire while returning home. A group armed with sharp weapons mercilessly beat him before igniting the flames. This incident adds to a disturbing trend of assaults targeting Hindu minorities in the country.
This incident marks the fourth attack on Hindus in the last few weeks. On December 24, a mob killed Amrit Mondal, a 29-year-old, in the Hossaindanga area of Kalimohar Union. Previously, on December 18, Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old Hindu, was fatally attacked in Bhaluka Upazila, Mymensingh, following false blasphemy accusations from a coworker.
These troubling events have sparked serious concerns regarding the security of religious minorities in Bangladesh. Reports indicate a notable uptick in violence against Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, and other minority groups, particularly during the current interim government led by Yunus. Human rights organizations globally have condemned these acts.
India has voiced significant concern over the ongoing threats facing minorities in Bangladesh, and it is diligently observing the situation to ensure peace and security in the region. The surge in violence has elicited widespread outrage, highlighting the urgent necessity for protective measures for these vulnerable communities.
