Heavy rains have unleashed across multiple regions of Kerala, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue alerts for various districts. An orange alert was issued for Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod, indicating the likelihood of very heavy rainfall ranging from 11 cm to 20 cm. Additionally, a yellow alert was issued for nine other districts, indicating expected heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm.
The IMD forecasts thunderstorms with moderate rainfall and gusty winds in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam districts. Further, an extended orange alert is in place for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts from June 14 to June 16.
The weather conditions are attributed to cyclonic circulations over north Gujarat and west central Bay of Bengal, which are expected to bring widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next five days.

In response to the alerts, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued advisories urging precautions. People are cautioned against standing or parking vehicles under trees due to the risk of uprooting or falling branches from strong winds. Residents in vulnerable structures like thatched or sheeted houses are advised to relocate to safer accommodations as directed by local authorities.
For coastal areas, the IMD and Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) have advised fishermen in Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep not to venture into the sea from June 13 to June 17. This caution is due to anticipated adverse weather conditions and strong winds. Fishermen are also warned about the possibility of high waves and storm surges along the Kerala and Tamil Nadu coasts until Sunday, emphasizing the need for careful navigation and fishing activities.
The ongoing weather alerts underscore the importance of preparedness and safety measures amidst the volatile weather patterns affecting Kerala and neighboring regions.
