Heavy Rainfall Floods Delhi, Turning City into a ‘Swimming Pool’

On Wednesday, Delhi was thrown into chaos as a significant downpour caused severe flooding across the national capital. The heavy rainfall, which began in the evening and was accompanied by strong winds and lightning, led to widespread waterlogging, inundated homes, and significant traffic disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) responded to the severe weather by issuing a “red alert” for the region. In response to the conditions, schools in Delhi will remain closed on August 1.

As the city grappled with the impacts of the torrential rain, residents faced challenges including impassable waterlogged roads, exorbitant cab fares, and water seeping into homes. The deluge prompted a surge of reactions on social media, where numerous residents criticized the city's infrastructure and shared dramatic images of the flooding.

One X user, Yasmin Kidwai, highlighted the lack of drainage in the city, commenting, “South Delhi - ring road all traffic blocked within two mins of rain - there is NO Drainage in Delhi.” Another user posted footage showing severe flooding in Karol Bagh, stating, “Just 20 mins of rain in Delhi today and look how Karol Bagh is already screwed,” with a video showing a staircase cascading with water.

Images of the flooded Press Club, located near the Parliament, also gained attention online. In New Friends Colony, residents were seen navigating through ankle-deep water. One resident expressed frustration, saying, “One hour of medium rain and A-Grade Colony paying the highest slab of property tax gets flooded due to neglect, bad management, choked rainwater drains.”

Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi's assurance that waterlogging issues would be addressed received mixed reactions. A sarcastic comment in response to her post read, “Any water-logging you just said?? What a joke madam!! Whole Delhi is a pool right now.”

The IMD reported that the clouds converged over Delhi from all directions, prompting an advisory for residents to avoid unnecessary travel due to the severe weather conditions.

In addition to the widespread flooding, a house in Delhi's Sabzi Mandi area collapsed amid the heavy rains. Emergency services dispatched five fire tenders to the site to manage the situation.
