Prince Harry: Tabloid Crusade Deepens Royal Rift

In a revealing new documentary airing Thursday, Prince Harry has disclosed that his fight against British tabloids has contributed to the ongoing rift with his royal family. The Duke of Sussex, who recently achieved a significant legal victory when a judge declared that phone hacking was "widespread and habitual" at the U.K.'s Mirror Group Newspapers, shared his thoughts with ITV.

Harry, 39, expressed regret that his family did not support him in his battle against privacy invasions. He described his legal struggle, which includes being the first senior royal in over a century to testify in court, as a "central piece" of his family’s discord. "The mission continues, but it has, yes, it’s caused, as you say, part of a rift," Harry remarked in the documentary “Tabloids On Trial.”

Breaking from the royal tradition of “never complain, never explain,” Harry pursued legal action against the press, an endeavor his father, King Charles III, opposed, as noted in legal filings. Additionally, Harry revealed that his brother, William, Prince of Wales, had secretly settled a complaint against Rupert Murdoch’s News Group Newspapers for a "huge" sum. This settlement, however, has not been the sole source of family tension.

Harry and his wife, Meghan, moved to the U.S. in 2020, citing intrusive media and alleged racial bias as reasons for leaving royal life. Their subsequent allegations of racial bias within the royal family, further explored in Harry’s memoir “Spare,” have exacerbated the division. Harry mentioned the difficulty of addressing family issues publicly due to the adverse media coverage he faces.

The documentary also features contributions from actor Hugh Grant, former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and soccer legend Paul Gascoigne. Grant, who is involved with the “Hacked Off” campaign, recently settled his lawsuit against News Group Newspapers for a substantial sum. He criticized the executives behind the phone hacking, stating, “I don’t hold massive grievances against the foot soldiers... but I remain bitter and determined to exact justice on the executives who commissioned this stuff.”

Despite News Group’s apology in 2011 and settlement of 1,300 claims related to the phone hacking scandal that led to the closure of News of the World, the publisher of The Sun has not accepted liability. Harry’s legal battles against News Group and the Daily Mail continue, as he remains steadfast in his quest for justice.

In his reflection, Harry wished his family had joined him in standing against media offenses for “the greater good.”
