A 16-year-old boy from Halifax has been handed a sentence of four months deferred custody along with 18 months probation after admitting guilt to various weapons-related crimes. This arrangement allows him to stay in the community under stringent supervision akin to a conditional adult sentence.
The teen was apprehended in the early hours of April 23, after he reached out to a suicide hotline, disclosing feelings of depression and suicidal thoughts, with a fixation on school shootings. He expressed admiration for the infamous Columbine incident and confessed to having thoughts about attacking his own educational institution.
Following a search at his residence, police discovered firearms, ammunition, racist material targeting the Black and Jewish communities, a suicide note, and a hit list of individuals he intended to harm.
Initially facing 33 charges, the teenager eventually pled guilty to six counts of unauthorized possession of firearms, one count of improper ammunition storage, and one count of carrying brass knuckles. Other charges regarding threats and the promotion of hate were dropped following a review of the evidence.
The presiding judge highlighted that there was a contemplation of extreme violence in the case, underscoring the gravity of the situation. However, she recognized positive advancements, noting that the teen had maintained his academic performance and completed educational programs while in custody.
The probation terms prevent him from approaching Citadel High School within a 50-meter radius, contacting certain students, using specified social media platforms, and having access to weapons. Additionally, he is mandated to disclose his internet browsing history to authorities.
The judge remarked that although the youth was once on a dangerous trajectory, ongoing treatment and structured monitoring could provide him with an opportunity for a brighter future.
