A 16-year-old class 12 student from Mokalwas village, Gurugram, who went missing on February 11, is believed to have died by suicide, police confirmed on Sunday. Her body was recovered from a 15-foot-deep pond near the village crematorium.
The girl had left her house late Wednesday night, as captured on CCTV footage. A senior official at Bilaspur police station said she was seen leaving home after having dinner with her family. Her school uniform was missing from her room, indicating she left without informing anyone.
The family had lodged a missing person report and offered a ₹1 lakh reward for information leading to her whereabouts.
Clues Found in Diary
Authorities discovered a diary in which the deceased left a message directing them to search near the cremation ground pond. In a note addressed to her parents, she wrote: “Mom and Dad, please forgive me. I am going to my grandfather.”
Recovery Operation
The police launched a 12-hour operation to recover the body. Divers and four tractor-mounted pumps were used to drain the pond. The body was found stuck in mud as the water level receded. Preliminary reports indicate she was wearing her school uniform at the time of death.
The girl’s father works in the village court library. She is survived by her parents and an elder brother. Police described her as academically bright. An autopsy was conducted under Section 193 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) before handing over the body to the family.
Authorities are continuing their investigation, including efforts to locate her mobile phone, to better understand the circumstances leading to the suspected suicide.
