A catastrophic fire erupted late Saturday night at the Gul Plaza Shopping Mall located on MA Jinnah Road in Karachi, resulting in a confirmed death toll of at least six, with 38 individuals unaccounted for. The inferno caused a portion of the complex to collapse, significantly complicating rescue operations.

As of now, authorities have managed to control about 60-70% of the fire, yet search and rescue missions are still underway as fears mount that several victims may still be trapped within the structure. The fire ignited around 10 PM, swiftly engulfing multiple stores within the mall.

In a tragic turn, a firefighter lost his life while courageously attempting to assist others. So far, six bodies have been recovered and identified, while 22 injured individuals are presently receiving medical care.

Tanveer Qasim, President of the Gul Plaza Traders Association, expressed deep concern for those potentially still inside, estimating that 80 to 100 individuals could be trapped. He criticized the government's response and emphasized the mall's significant role in Karachi's economic landscape as a major tax contributor. According to Qasim, local traders played a vital role in rescuing between 200 and 250 people during the initial chaos.

Firefighting teams faced numerous challenges, including persistent shortages of water and diesel, which hindered efforts to control the blaze. Harrowing distress calls from those trapped inside revealed the dire situation, with some suffering from smoke inhalation and injuries due to the panic that ensued.

Authorities cautioned that the fire remains fierce and is unlikely to be extinguished soon, posing continual risks for both those inside the mall and rescue personnel.

The incident has stirred reactions from the highest echelons of Pakistani leadership. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have expressed profound sorrow over the incident, extending condolences to the bereaved families and pledging immediate support for the injured, ensuring access to optimal medical care.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party, shared his condolences regarding the tragic loss of life and damage to property. He has called upon the Sindh Chief Minister and Karachi Mayor to mobilize all necessary resources for rescue and firefighting efforts, while advocating for a thorough investigation of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

As the rescue efforts continue into the night, the city grieves for the victims and holds onto hope for the safe return of those still missing in this heartbreaking event.
