Former minister Steven Guilbeault has expressed grave concerns that Canada will struggle to achieve its 2030 climate commitments due to recent governmental actions. He emphasized that crucial climate initiatives are being stalled or diminished, rendering the targets “unattainable”.
Guilbeault pointed to a recent agreement between the federal government and Alberta as a pivotal moment. This deal permits a new bitumen pipeline to the British Columbia coast while delaying significant climate policies, such as the emissions cap for oil and gas and portions of the clean electricity guidelines.
He noted that while private sector investment is vital, it cannot supersede robust regulations and standards. Without these, he argues, Canada will not achieve the necessary emissions reductions to fulfill its commitments.
Guilbeault mentioned he was not briefed on the agreement's specifics until after its announcement. Upon reviewing its terms, he felt compelled to step down from his cabinet position, believing that remaining would have compromised his principles.
He criticized Alberta’s leadership for hindering the advancement of renewable energy, stating that the province was previously attracting considerable investments before political decisions halted new renewable projects, which resulted in job losses.
Guilbeault warned that conceding to Alberta's demands could lead to further future implications. He highlighted that the federal government had been making consistent strides in climate policies but seems to be regressing now.
Despite resigning, he intends to advocate for stronger climate initiatives within his party, hoping his decision will prompt a reassessment of the government’s direction towards a more equitable climate strategy.
