Dubai, UAE — January 15, 2026:
Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, will no longer be able to edit images of real people in revealing clothing in regions where such content is illegal, xAI announced Wednesday on X.
The move comes after worldwide criticism over the creation of sexualized AI-generated images of women and children, prompting investigations and bans by multiple governments. In California, authorities have launched a formal investigation into the proliferation of nonconsensual sexually explicit material generated via Grok.
Initially, media inquiries about the issue were dismissed by xAI with the statement, “legacy media lies.” However, the company now says it will geoblock content that violates local laws and has implemented technological safeguards to prevent users from editing images of real people in bikinis, underwear, or other revealing attire.
These restrictions apply to all users, including paid subscribers, who now have limited access to Grok’s image creation and editing features. According to xAI, this step ensures accountability and reduces the risk of abuse.
The backlash intensified after Grok’s “spicy mode” allowed the creation of sexually explicit content. Malaysia and Indonesia have already taken legal action and blocked the AI, while the U.K., European Union, France, India, and Brazil are investigating potential violations of online safety laws.
California’s Attorney General, Rob Bonta, condemned Grok’s misuse, stating, “The avalanche of reports detailing non-consensual, sexually explicit material produced by xAI is shocking. This content, depicting women and children in nude and intimate situations, has been used to harass individuals online. We have zero tolerance for AI-based creation and dissemination of nonconsensual intimate images or child sexual abuse material.”
xAI’s latest measures reflect a global effort to ensure AI technology is used responsibly while adhering to legal and ethical standards worldwide.
