Google to Shut Free Dark Web Monitoring Tool in 2026

Google has announced it will shut down its free dark web monitoring tool, a service that warned users if their personal information appeared in data leaks circulating on the dark web. The feature will stop scanning for new breaches on January 15, 2026, and will be fully discontinued on February 16, 2026, after which all related user data will be permanently deleted.

Launched in 2023 as part of the Google One subscription and later made available to all Google account holders in 2024, the tool was designed to give everyday users visibility into data breaches. It allowed people to opt in and receive alerts if details such as email addresses, phone numbers, birthdates or other personal information were found in dark web databases linked to known leaks.

According to Google, user feedback played a key role in the decision. While many found the alerts informative, the company said the tool often left users unsure about what to do next once a potential breach was flagged. Because of this, Google plans to shift its focus toward security features that provide clearer steps to help users protect their accounts and personal data.

The company is encouraging users to rely on existing protections within their Google accounts. These include Security Checkup, passkeys, two-step verification, Google Password Manager and Password Checkup, which help identify weak or compromised passwords. Google also pointed to its “Results About You” feature, which allows users to find and request the removal of personal information that appears in Google Search results.

The move comes at a time when concerns around cybersecurity remain high. Stolen credentials and personal data traded on the dark web continue to be a major driver of identity theft, financial fraud and other online crimes. As a result, many users now turn to independent breach-monitoring services to stay informed about data leaks affecting their information.

With the retirement of its dark web monitoring tool, Google is closing the chapter on one of its most accessible privacy features. While the company says it will continue working to protect users from online threats, this change marks a shift away from dark web alerts toward tools focused more on prevention and account security.
