The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is moving with greater focus towards building stronger trade partnerships across the world. On Monday, Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi met with the GCC’s free trade negotiating team through a video conference, where he reviewed the progress made so far in discussions with several countries.
During the meeting, Albudaiwi received a detailed briefing on how talks with international partners are advancing. The team explained the stages completed in the ongoing negotiations and outlined the road ahead for securing agreements that could bring lasting benefits to the six member nations of the GCC — Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain.
A Call for Greater Effort
The Secretary-General stressed that while progress is visible, the pace must increase. He urged the negotiators to intensify their efforts to reach deals that would reflect the “common interests and desired benefits” of Gulf citizens. He highlighted that these agreements are not just about numbers or economic targets but about shaping the GCC’s role as a powerful and reliable global economic partner.
Albudaiwi emphasized that trade deals can open new markets, attract investments, and create stronger links with both regional and international economies. “The more successful we are in these negotiations, the more the GCC will stand out as a key player in global trade,” he reportedly told the team.
Strengthening Economic Integration
One of the central points raised during the meeting was how free trade agreements directly support economic integration among GCC countries. By reducing trade barriers, cutting tariffs, and improving cooperation in different sectors, these agreements will make it easier for Gulf nations to trade with each other and with the world.
This step is especially important as the GCC continues to diversify its economy away from oil and gas, focusing on industries such as manufacturing, logistics, tourism, finance, and renewable energy.

Expanding Global Horizons
Albudaiwi underlined the importance of expanding the GCC’s partnerships into new horizons. While the region has strong relations with traditional partners, the future lies in building ties with more countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Free trade deals, he explained, are a bridge to those new markets, allowing Gulf products, services, and investments to reach wider audiences.
At the same time, international partners gain access to the Gulf region’s fast-growing economies, modern infrastructure, and investment opportunities. This mutual benefit, according to the Secretary-General, is what makes such agreements essential in the current global economy.
Secretariat’s Full Support
Albudaiwi reassured the negotiating team that the GCC General Secretariat fully supports their work. He promised that the Secretariat would provide every resource and guidance needed to achieve successful results in ongoing and upcoming talks.
He also emphasized that the ultimate goal is not only signing agreements but ensuring these deals lead to long-term growth, job creation, and improved living standards for citizens of the six Gulf countries.
Why Free Trade Matters for the GCC
For the GCC, free trade agreements are more than just economic documents. They are strategic tools to:
* Increase exports of Gulf products and services.
* Attract global companies to invest in the Gulf.
* Encourage innovation and new industries.
* Provide more job opportunities for citizens.
* Strengthen the Gulf’s political and economic presence in world affairs.
By becoming part of more trade agreements, the GCC can position itself as one of the most dynamic economic blocs in the world, competing alongside the European Union and ASEAN.
Looking Ahead
The meeting ended with a renewed commitment from the negotiating team to accelerate progress and deliver results that will place the GCC at the center of global trade activity. Albudaiwi’s call for stronger effort reflects the region’s determination to play a bigger role in shaping the international economy.
As the GCC pushes forward, the coming months could see breakthroughs in deals with multiple countries, giving Gulf citizens and businesses new opportunities on the world stage.
