In Gaza City, the Hamas-run civil defense agency reported the discovery of around 60 bodies after Israeli forces withdrew from parts of the city amid heavy fighting. This discovery unfolded amidst ongoing efforts by international mediators to bring an end to the conflict, which has now entered its 10th month. The situation underscores the severe humanitarian toll of the war.
US President Joe Biden addressed the situation at a NATO summit in Washington, highlighting progress made by US diplomats and other mediators towards achieving a ceasefire. He stressed the urgency of ending the prolonged conflict, recognizing the suffering and devastation faced by civilians caught in the crossfire.

The bodies were found in the Tal al-Hawa and Al-Sinaa districts of Gaza City, where Israeli forces had recently operated after issuing evacuation orders to civilians earlier in the week. Mahmud Bassal, a spokesman for the civil defense agency, noted the challenges faced by rescue crews in reaching missing individuals buried under rubble from destroyed homes.
Residents and local reports indicated that Israeli troops had withdrawn following days of intense fighting with Hamas militants, though Israel had not immediately confirmed this. Prior to the discovery of bodies, Gaza's health ministry had reported 32 deaths overnight, primarily among children and women, emphasizing the civilian impact of the conflict.
The conflict's epicenter recently shifted to Gaza City, particularly affecting the eastern district of Shujaiya. The Israeli military had issued warnings urging residents to evacuate, describing the area as a "dangerous combat zone" where up to 350,000 people were seeking refuge, according to UN estimates.
Teachers and residents described widespread destruction in Gaza City neighborhoods like Al-Rimal, highlighting the dire humanitarian situation with homes on fire and injured individuals unable to receive aid. The International Committee of the Red Cross emphasized the urgent humanitarian needs in Gaza, where entire families are trapped without essential services.
Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire and secure the release of hostages have been ongoing through indirect talks involving Qatar, the US, and Egypt. Despite diplomatic efforts, significant gaps remain in reaching a comprehensive agreement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted on achieving Israel's strategic goals, including the destruction of Hamas and ensuring security along Gaza's southern border with Egypt.
President Biden outlined a framework for a potential ceasefire agreement, which includes the release of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinians imprisoned by Israel. He expressed optimism about progress in negotiations but emphasized the need for a comprehensive plan to stabilize Gaza and secure long-term peace.
The conflict erupted following Hamas's attack on southern Israel, resulting in civilian casualties and hostage-taking. Israel responded with a military offensive that has claimed thousands of lives in Gaza, exacerbating a humanitarian crisis marked by severe shortages of food and medical supplies.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for increased international support for humanitarian aid in Gaza, urging donor governments to sustain funding for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, despite longstanding challenges and opposition.
