Washington: Ceasefire Negotiations in Gaza Near Final Stages As the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues, negotiations for a ceasefire deal appear to be approaching their final stages. U.S. President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are scheduled to discuss the remaining issues on Thursday, according to a senior U.S. official. This update comes as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to address the situation in Gaza.
The official, speaking to reporters ahead of the meetings, indicated that the remaining obstacles in the negotiations are manageable and that further discussions will take place over the coming week to finalize an agreement between Israel and Hamas. The proposed deal would involve a six-week ceasefire in exchange for the release of women, elderly men, and wounded hostages over a 42-day period.

The conflict began on October 7, when Hamas fighters launched a violent assault on southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 people and the capture of 250 individuals. This attack set off a larger conflict that has claimed the lives of over 38,000 people in Gaza.
Currently, Hamas and other militant groups are holding 120 hostages. Israeli authorities estimate that approximately one-third of these hostages have already died. Despite months of intermittent negotiations, no deal has yet been reached to secure the release of any hostages.
The U.S. official emphasized that the negotiations have evolved significantly since last month, noting that many previously insurmountable issues have now been addressed. President Biden's upcoming discussions with Prime Minister Netanyahu are expected to focus on bridging the final gaps in the ceasefire agreement.
In addition to Biden's talks with Netanyahu, Vice President Kamala Harris will also meet with the Israeli leader later in the day. Harris, who is poised to be the Democratic nominee for the November presidential election, has taken on a more prominent role following Biden's decision not to seek reelection. Biden's choice came amid concerns from some Democrats about his mental acuity.
The senior U.S. official assured that both Biden and Harris are fully aligned on U.S. policy regarding Israel and Gaza. The official stated that this alignment will be evident in the discussions with Israeli leaders, reinforcing the U.S. commitment to supporting its ally while working toward a resolution in the conflict.
