Food Tech Valley, an initiative led by the UAE government, is taking significant strides toward establishing a sustainable food ecosystem with the recent signing of a landmark 27-year partnership with Spinneys, the leading premium supermarket chain in the region. As part of this agreement, Spinneys will construct a cutting-edge 500,000 square foot processing facility within Food Tech Valley. The formal agreement was signed by Rashed Mohammad, the Chief Real Estate Officer of Wasl, and Sunil Kumar, the CEO of Spinneys. During the signing, Rashed Mohammad expressed enthusiasm about welcoming Spinneys to Food Tech Valley. He emphasized the importance of this partnership in providing consumers with sustainably sourced, high-quality food. "The addition of the Spinneys facility is a significant step in our mission to transform the food sector," he stated. "We aim to position Dubai as a hub for food innovation, sustainability, and security, and we are excited to support the UAE’s food security goals alongside partners who share this vision."
Sunil Kumar, CEO of Spinneys, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the brand’s commitment to the well-being of its customers and the community. He noted Spinneys' longstanding support for local farmers and food producers, making this partnership particularly meaningful. "Being part of the visionary Food Tech Valley project is a source of pride for us. It represents a significant advancement in our growth plans and will enhance our ability to serve customers with innovative food processing capabilities," Kumar said.
Food Tech Valley, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, is designed to attract key players and innovators in the food industry. The recent collaboration with Spinneys highlights Food Tech Valley's role as a facilitator of pioneering projects and an ideal platform for industry leaders to innovate and expand.
Given that over 90% of food consumed in the UAE is imported, with a projected 50% increase in food demand by 2030, Food Tech Valley is poised to play a crucial role in developing a more sustainable and self-sufficient food ecosystem. This initiative is part of the UAE government’s ambition to rank among the top nations in the Global Food Security Index by 2051.
The vision for Food Tech Valley is to transform the UAE into a global hub for technology-driven food and agricultural solutions. It is aligned with the UAE Food Security National Strategy 2051, focusing on connectivity, innovation, and facilitating business growth in the food tech sector. The facility will include production zones, warehousing, logistics, cold-storage capabilities, an innovation and research and development center, an academy, a business park, a marketplace, a visitor center, and residential areas, all contributing to a holistic approach to food security and sustainability.
Through this ambitious partnership, Food Tech Valley and Spinneys are set to redefine the food processing landscape in the UAE, ensuring a secure and sustainable future for food in the region.
