Former Fashion Mogul Peter Nygard Sentenced to 11 Years for Sex Assault

On Monday, former Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard was sentenced to 11 years in prison after being convicted on four counts of sexual assault. The charges stemmed from multiple attacks on women that took place in his Toronto office building, with some incidents dating back several decades. The sentence has been adjusted to account for the time Nygard has already spent behind bars. Consequently, he has approximately 6.7 years left to serve and will be eligible for full parole after serving one-third of that time.

Nygard, 83, was found guilty by a Toronto jury last November on four counts of sexual assault. He was acquitted of a fifth count of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement. The Ontario Superior Court trial, which lasted six weeks, included testimony from five complainants who described being assaulted by Nygard in a private bedroom suite located on the top floor of his office building between the late 1980s and around 2005.

Canadian authorities arrested Nygard in late 2020 at the request of the United States, where he was accused of using his business empire to exploit women and girls for sexual gratification. Following his arrest, Toronto police laid additional charges against him about a year later. Nygard is also facing sexual assault and forcible confinement charges in Manitoba and Quebec.

In addition to the Canadian charges, Nygard is fighting extradition to the United States, where he faces federal charges in New York. These charges include conspiracy to commit racketeering, transportation of a minor for prostitution, and sex trafficking involving force, fraud, or coercion.

Born in Finland and raised in Manitoba, Canada, Nygard built a successful fashion empire, becoming one of the wealthiest individuals in the country. However, his story took a dark turn, leading to his conviction and sentencing. Justice Robert Goldstein remarked on Monday that “Peter Nygard is a sexual predator. He is also a Canadian success story gone very wrong.” He added that Nygard abused his wealth and power to commit the crimes for which he has been convicted
