Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport faced major disruptions on Wednesday, as a thick fog enveloped the area. More than 78 flights arriving and 70 departing saw cancellations, and two incoming flights were redirected to other airports.
Domestic carrier IndiGo released a travel advisory warning passengers of potential delays lasting into the afternoon, citing poor visibility that affected operations not only in Delhi but throughout northern India. Flights to Pantnagar and Dehradun operated by IndiGo were also impacted.
To ensure smooth operations, the airline stated that movements of both departures and arrivals were being meticulously managed. IndiGo personnel were present at crucial spots in the airport to assist travelers whenever necessary.
By early afternoon, conditions improved, allowing flights to resume more effectively. The airport’s official communication stressed the importance of passengers keeping in touch with their airlines for the latest updates and confirmed that ground staff were actively providing support in all terminals.
Operations were conducted under CAT III instrument landing systems, which generally causes delays and possible cancellations amid such foggy conditions. The airport expressed regret for the disruptions and assured travelers that support was ongoing during these challenging weather circumstances.
Earlier that morning, heavy fog descended upon Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region, significantly reducing visibility, and causing traffic disruptions across various critical areas.
As the day progressed, visibility steadily improved, contributing to the stabilization of operations at one of the busiest airports in India.
