Today, rescue teams in Indonesia and Sri Lanka are pushing against the clock to save survivors stranded in remote areas following catastrophic floods and landslides that have resulted in more than 1,300 fatalities across four countries.
In Indonesia, survivors are expressing frustration at the sluggish rescue efforts and delays in aid distribution. Humanitarian organizations have termed the disaster unprecedented, even for a nation accustomed to natural disasters.
The country has been hit hard by severe monsoon rains and two unusual tropical storm systems, causing record rainfall in regions of Sri Lanka, Indonesia's Sumatra, southern Thailand, and northern Malaysia. Confirmed fatalities in Indonesia stand at 753, with 650 individuals still unaccounted for.
Ade Soekadis, executive director of Mercy Corps Indonesia, stated, “The extent of the devastation and area impacted is enormous. Reports of food and water shortages are alarming, and conditions are likely to deteriorate further.”
Survivor Reinaro Waruwu, speaking from an evacuation center in Padan, recounted a harrowing experience: “It felt like an earthquake,” as he recalled neighbors trapped under rubble. The delayed aid response has left many without immediate assistance.
Similarly, 37-year-old Hamida Telaumbaunua shared her plight of losing her home and belongings to the floodwaters, expressing her shock: “This was the first time I experienced such a flood. It’s hard to envision the future.”
The poor weather conditions have also impacted Thailand, with at least 176 casualties reported, and two deaths in Malaysia.
In Sri Lanka, Cyclone Ditwah unleashed devastating floods and landslides last week, with 465 confirmed deaths and 366 individuals still missing. The financial toll for reconstruction may reach up to $7 billion, affecting over 1.5 million people and prompting more than 200,000 to seek refuge in government-run shelters.
Despite the crisis, Sri Lanka welcomed a luxury cruise liner to Colombo port, indicating the country's message of being “safe, open, and ready for visitors,” according to the national tourism board.
